چکیده
Bryan Pijanowski is a Professor and University Faculty Scholar in the Department of Forestry and Natural Resources at Purdue. He is also the Director of Discovery Park’s Center for Global Soundscapes and the author of several papers that outline the new field of soundscape ecology. He has traveled the world to conduct his soundscape research, including places like Patagonia, Costa Rica, Tanzania, Mongolia and of course, Borneo. He is also the Executive Producer of an National Science Foundation–funded giant screen film called “Global Soundscapes: A Mission to Record the Earth.”

There are advantages with integrating the study of soundscapes with a more general framework, such as ecology. Soundscape studies will be able to use the rich theoretical framework of ecology, as well as benefit from publicity due to the current ecological movement. However, ecology puts new demands on the theoretical concepts used in soundscape studies, and these new demands are likely to caus...
متن کاملMarine Soundscape Ecology
In the face of accelerated climate change, monitoring biodiversity has become a critical task for ecologists. Habitat loss is occurring at an alarming rate both in terrestrial and marine ecosystems, resulting in endangerment and extinction of species up to 1,000 times faster than natural rates. However, traditional biodiversity measurements are logistically and financially difficult, making bio...
متن کاملPost-Glacial Spatial Dynamics in a Rainforest Biodiversity Hot Spot
Here we investigate the interaction between ecology and climate concerning the distribution of rainforest species differentially distributed along altitudinal gradients of eastern Australia. The potential distributions of the two species closely associated with different rainforest types were modelled to infer the potential contribution of post-glacial warming on spatial distribution and altitu...

Humans are a true force of nature and human actions have taken their place alongside the biosphere, lithosphere, hydrosphere, and atmosphere as defining processes shaping the global landscape (Ellis & Haff, 2009). Much like forecasting the weather and trends in the economy, the interactions of humans and complex ecosystems (such as a food web in a tropical rainforest) are fraught with complexit...
متن کاملNew interpretations of fine-scale spatial genetic structure.
Recent methodological advances permit refined inferences of evolutionary processes from the fine-scale spatial genetic structure of plant populations. In this issue of Molecular Ecology, Born et al. (2008) exploit the full power of these methods by examining effects of ancient and recent landscape histories in an African rainforest tree species. The authors first detected admixture of distinct ...
